uploading "Ark" -- An Important Ceramic Sculpture by Stig Lindberg
Sweden
1960
This very rare ceramic sculpture by Stig Lindberg was made in 1960 for his friend Jerome Gould, the Los Angeles-based graphic and industrial designer.**

"Ark" is a masterpiece in every sense. The modelling of the figures, the impressed patterns on their surfaces, and the spare use of glaze all show what Professor Lindberg was capable of in 1960, when he was at the height of his creative powers.

Accompanying this piece is a copy of a letter written by Stig Lindberg to Jerome Gould, in which this sculpture is mentioned.

** Jerome Gould, who was part of a California design movement which also counted Saul Bass and Louis Danziger as members, created the award-winning Michelob bottle in 1962; its shape was certainly influenced by Stig Lindberg's vases, as were prototype bottle designs Gould produced around that time for Pepsi.
