"Tea Bowl" by Peter Voulkos U.S.A. made in 1997 A very expressive piece of stoneware by the greatest American studio potter of the 20th century. Peter Voulkos made these magnificent tea-bowls in homage to the Japanese tradition, which he revered. With exuberant surface effects and distortion that are characteristic of Voulkos' wood-fired pieces, this bowl is alive with the story of its creation. Wood-firing is an ancient process which is most time-consuming and difficult to control. These drawbacks can become advantages in the hands of a master, and Voulkos was a keen enthusiast of this technique. He would travel great distances to visit and try out newly erected kilns. Typically, wood-firing results in the deposition of sometimes quite highly-textured ash-derived glaze on the surface of the piece being fired. Such unpredictability and spontaneity almost certainly appealed to the abstract expressionist in Voulkos. Signed and dated.
