Faience Bowl by Stig Lindberg Sweden
circa 1949
Sweden, in common with other far-northern lands, is a place where it is more often than not extremely cold, and where the sun hesitates for much of the long winter. As a consequence, Swedes, throughout the course of history, have been compelled to spend much time indoors. Thus their skill at creating bright, pleasure-giving objects with which to fill their homes: it is something like a Darwinian adaptation to their environment.
In this footed bowl marvellous color, pattern, and form combine -- as they always do when looking at a Stig Lindberg faience -- to create a focal point of pure happiness. The bowl makes you happy, anything inside the bowl is happy, the bowl is itself happy. Filled with flowers, chocolates, fruit, or even left empty, this bowl is a beacon of delight that will cheer up any interior -- even if you don't live within driving distance of the Arctic Circle.
