Lobi Bateba Figure Burkina Faso
20th century
The Lobi, a people who live in Burkina Faso (formerly Upper Volta), have traditionally carved superbly expressive wooden sculptures called "bateba". These figures are placed on family shrines inside the homes of the Lobi as petitioners of various forms of assistance from the spirit world. This figure is of the type known as "bateba duntundara", whose outstretched arms ask for protection from its owner's ancestors.
This particular bateba is distinguished by an exquisitely carved face, and a very rich patina that attests to its having been used for many generations by a Lobi family.
